Geochemical analysis of peloids, quality assessment and evaluation of ecosystem services of peloid-rich areas in Serbia: Insights from the PELAS Project

Peloids, or healing muds, are widely used in pelotherapy due to their therapeutic properties, which are influenced by their mineralogical, geochemical, and thermophysical characteristics. This study focuses on the comprehensive characterization of peloids sourced from 15 commercial spas in Serbia, including Rusanda, Kanjiža, Junaković, Koviljača, Vrujci, Selters, Ždrelo, Niška, Prolom, Kuršumlijska, Lukovska, Sijarinska, Vranjska, Jošanička and Bujanovačka. Through an integrated multidisciplinary approach, the research aims to provide critical insights into the suitability of these peloids for therapeutic applications and to understand conditions that contribute to their formation.
