Exploring new ionic drugs in electrically controlled drug delivery
Targeted drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) is hindered by the semi-permeable blood-brain barrier (BBB). Iontronic delivery systems, which use electric fields and ion exchange membranes (IEMs) to transport charged molecules, offer a promising fluid-free approach. This thesis explores which molecular properties affect compatibility with iontronic devices. Key factors identified include molecular size, solubility, linearity, and charge at near-neutral pH. These findings provide guidelines for selecting suitable drug candidates and optimizing iontronic delivery technologies.
