Developing a top-mounted canister stove : To align with Trangia’s brand identity
This master’s thesis was conducted in collaboration with Trangia, with the goal to develop a top-mounted canister stove, a product not currently part of their lineup. The aim was to design this stove so it could attract new customers while also retaining existing ones, enabling the customers to remain loyal to a brand they trust and rely on. Top-mounted canister stoves are characterized by their compact size, lightweight design, and upright mounting directly on a gas canister. The project followed the Double Diamond design process which consists of four phases, Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver. In the Discover phase, existing stoves were thoroughly analyzed and each component and function was examined in detail. User interviews were conducted to gain insights into needs and usage contexts, while Trangia’s design language and brand values were explored through various methods to understand the image they wish to convey to their customers. In the Define phase, findings from the Discover phase were synthesized to form a solid foundation for ideation. These insights guided the Development phase, where multiple concepts were generated and iteratively evaluated. The most promising concept was then refined in the Deliver phase, where its details were finalized through prototyping at different levels of fidelity. The final result is a top-mounted canister stove named Trangia Top, short for top-mounted, while also referencing the top of a mountain and the idea of top performance. The design reflects Trangia’s brand identity both visually and experientially. It is easy for beginners to understand, yet includes features that make it a solid choice for more experienced users as well.
