A cultural history of indonesian urban soundscape: locating urban experiences within the urban soundscape of Indonesia

The thesis examines the sonic dimension of Indonesian urban life in which sound shapes urban experiences. It specifically focuses on the fabric of everyday life within the urban neighbourhood known as the kampung. The thesis aims to unpack several aspects related to the formation of urban experiences within the soundscape of kampung life. The research is expected to produce a version of urban and cultural analysis of kampung life based on ethnographic enquiries into the sonic experiences of the kampung people. Additionally, it aspires to contribute to the development of a cultural history of the Indonesian urban soundscape. Drawing upon ethnographic materials and sound recordings, the thesis investigates the sonic and spatial practices of the kampung community, known as the orang kampung, as they engage with and make sense of their everydayness. Informed by works and approaches on urban, cultural, and sound studies, the analysis delves into interrelated aspects of sound, space, and activities within the formation of kampung experiences, specifically of sonic experiences. The thesis argues that the kampung sonic experiences play a critical role in sustaining the collective identity of orang kampung and serve as a mode of existence in the context of capitalist spatial production. It suggests that the study on sonic experiences can provide valuable insights into the cultural and historical dimensions of urban life in Indonesia.
