Avifauna en el recinto universitario Rubén Darío de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma De Nicaragua, Managua (UNAN-Managua)

Urban development and population growth generate changes in the natural environment, highlighting the importance of universities as ideal locations for studying biodiversity. However, little is known about the flora and fauna of the Ruben Dario University Campus of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, Managua. This study represents one of the pioneering efforts to learn about the avifaunal diversity on campus and addressing existing knowledge gaps regarding biodiversity in the municipality. This research has a mixed cross-sectional approach, employing intensive searches of individuals across three predetermined sites. We identified 98 species, of which 66.10% are resident birds, 29.34% are migratory birds and 4.56% have mixed populations (between resident and migratory). Notably, this study also records the first documented occurrences of P. holochlorus rubritorquis, Dryocopus lineatus, and Setophaga virens within the municipality of Managua. It was identified that 26.5% birds reported are identified facing varying degrees of threat. In conclusion, our findings underscore the importance of campus green spaces in supporting both resident and migratory bird populations, highlighting their potential as wildlife refuges, particularly when considering the broader surrounding environment.
