Anita Delgado and Federico Beltrán Massés: Connections Between Model and Painter
The main objective of this article is to analyse the friendship between the painter Federico Beltrán Massés from Cuba and the maharaní of Kapurthala Anita Delgado from Málaga, basing on this relationship’s main results: the extraordinary portrait of the young woman, painted in Paris in 1919; as well as the trip to Hindustan that the artist made in 1927, incited –among other factors– by the experiences shared by his model years before. As secondary objectives, focusing on each of these two matters: on the one hand, the aforementioned painting will be studied from its formal and iconographic features, as well as from its journey to enter in Museum of Málaga’s current collection; and on the other hand, different details about Beltrán’s trip will be analyzed from a series of manuscripts found in his family archive, which –most of them– have remained unpublished to date.
