Women status and work : At the economic department at Kristinehamns Hospital during the years 1902 and 1920
This analysis is based on a study about the differences between female and male workers atthe Economic Department at Kristinehamns Hospital between 1902 and 1920. To see if thedifference in work was based on a gender-based hierarchy. The study takes of in YvonneHirdman's gender theory about the fact that women were less than men. The theory is laternarrowed down to include Barrington Moores Jr's ideas regarding the division between low-versus high-status work based on the source material, to make it easier to observe if there wasa division in labor based on gender or salary. The source material used is based on written textfrom Mariebergssjukus archives and is analyzed based on a qualitative analysis with a startingpoint in the named theory. Examining the source material establishes differences between thewomen's and the men’s work and that the womanly work in most cases was viewed as lessthan the men's work. There also seemed to be exceptions present. In this case, work were thewomen and men worked alongside each other, and where the women, plural in this case, earned more than the manly workers in the same field. The analysis chapter concludes that thedivision of labor was connected to power and hierarchy based on a scale division and thesalary between workers. This hierarchy was visible not only between women and men butalso between women and women and between men and men. The analysis also explains whatkind of work the women did versus what type of work the men did and what differentiatedthem.
