Waddenzee-Vogel:An interactive, physics-based game about marine pollution in the Dutch North Sea

Container-ship cargo loss in the English Channel threatens the Waddenzee ecological system at the Dutch coastline. Public awareness is crucial for enacting relevant counter-policies. This project implements gamification as a method for increased user engagement and raised public awareness of ocean debris. The approach draws attention to the environmental challenge through a thematic reward scheme. The qualitative- and quantitative evaluations show that the reward-scheme interaction yields higher engagement compared to conventional methods, which is substantiated by measured interaction times from an audience study.

Abstract

Container-ship cargo loss in the English Channel threatens the Waddenzee ecological system at the Dutch coastline. Public awareness is crucial for enacting relevant counter-policies. This project implements gamification as a method for increased user engagement and raised public awareness of ocean debris. The approach draws attention to the environmental challenge through a thematic reward scheme. The qualitative- and quantitative evaluations show that the reward-scheme interaction yields higher engagement compared to conventional methods, which is substantiated by measured interaction times from an audience study.
