360 VSP: Issues and limitations of 360 Virtual Sound Productions for mobile devices

This poster explores challenges in designing sound pipelines for cross-platform 360-degree video. Virtual Production companies face issues ensuring spatial audio compatibility across devices. Collaborating with a sound expert, we developed a prototype pipeline converting 360° video to 16:9 format with downmixed binaural audio, involving video/audio editing and reframing.Listening tests with 21 participants showed a preference for 360° content over 2D, highlighting audio clarity, smooth transitions, and sync as key. Challenges included directional mismatches and disorientation in fast scenes. We identified limits in synchronising spatial audio with camera movement and propose improving Insta360 Studio workflows, creating Premiere Pro plug-ins, and linking video/audio reframing processes. These solutions address workflow gaps and support immersive audio’s role in enhancing user experience. The study calls for specialised tools to aid sound designers and improve cross-platform 360° video production.
