What did Chopin hear in Sochaczew? The distribution of innovative brass instruments in Polish military bands at the turn of the 1820s and the 1830s
The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw the sudden development of innovations in brass instruments. The new technologies included such devices as slides, keys and valves that were designed to make these instruments fully chromatic. Polish military bands were among the earliest music ensembles to use such a modernised instrumentation, around the turn of the 1820s and 1830s. While written primary sources from Fryderyk Chopin and other Polish authors of the time throw light on some aspects of these instruments’ construction, the revealed iconographical material by Józefat Łukaszewicz offers something more: one of the earliest pieces of evidence of the use of the piston cornet. However, although detailed reconstruction of the instrumental line-ups of military bands active in the Congress Kingdom of Poland is still not possible, one can guess that the musical performance which the young Chopin listened to and watched in Sochaczew was one of the earliest examples of the new musical soundscapes related to the implementation of modernised brass instruments.
