Vägen till Fölning: En App för Avelspårning och Fölningsalarmvid Vård av Ston

Horse breeders often experience stress during foaling due to the unpredictability ofbirth and the need for timely intervention. This thesis investigates how stress can be reduced by minimizing breeders’ cognitive load during this critical time. Using a ResearchThrough Design (RTD) approach, the project involved qualitative interviews, thematicanalysis, iterative prototyping, and evaluation through a focus group and usability testing.Thematic analysis revealed three key user needs: Presence and Precision during foaling,Usability and Control of the system, and support for the Uniqueness of each mare. Theseinsights informed the design of a mobile application that includes Mare Management, aBreeding Diary, foal alarm integration, a Care Plan, User and Friend Connections, andHeat Cycle Tracking. The final high-fidelity prototype was evaluated positively by users, who found it clear and easy to use. Findings suggest that thoughtful UX design can reduceboth intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load while supporting germane load. This impliesthat well-designed digital tools can improve breeders’ decision-making and reduce stressduring the foaling process.
