Temporarily externalization of intra-thecal morphine pump to prevent opioid withdrawal

Presentation: A 29-year-old cancer patient presented two months post-insertion of an Intrathecal Morphine pump secondary to pump protrusion due to wound dehiscence around the pump insertion site.
Diagnosis: The patient was diagnosed with an infection in the pocket site of pump insertion.
Treatment: The Intrathecal morphine pump was temporarily externalized within 24 hours of hospital admission.
Discussion: Various techniques have been described to prevent drug withdrawal after explantation of Intrathecal pumps. One of these techniques include temporarily externalization of Intrathecal pumps and this has been described previously for Baclofen pumps. We describe successful temporarily externalization of Intrathecal morphine pump in a cancer patient for source control of infection and to prevent opioid withdrawal.
