From Soil to Prescriptions

Antibiotic resistance has become more prevalent than ever in the fight against ESKAPE pathogens causing treatment options to significantly narrow. The research presented within details the method of a serial dilution from a soil sample collected by a JCCC student in their backyard in hopes of adding to the research of antibiotic resistance. Based on the serial dilution, an antibiotic screening plate of potential candidates were screened against the safe relatives of the 6 ESKAPE pathogens. By the end of the experiment, one single antibiotic screening candidate had its DNA isolated, and a band of DNA strands were attempted to be discovered through gel electrophoresis. Based on the results, the experiment may be handed off for future research for replication and aid in the fight against antibiotic resistance.
