Simulation-Driven Development of Carburetor : Developing a one-dimensional simulation model in GT-Suite to support more efficient designs

Advancements in simulation tools such as GT-Suite might enable accurate modelling of carburetors. This thesis examines how a simulation-based approach can enhance two-stroke engine carburetor design and reduce reliance on physical testing. While these engines offer a high power-to-weight ratio, they suffer from low fuel efficiency and high emissions. Traditional carburetors lack precise air-fuel control, making optimization difficult. By utilizing a modern simulation tool, this study aims to explore the feasibility of carburetor simulation and accuracy, enhance performance predictions, and support the development of more efficient, low-emission two-stroke engines. Furthermore, to evaluate the feasibility of using simulation for carburetor development, a one-dimensional simulation model was created in GT-Suite and benchmarked against measurements from physical tests conducted on the carburetor. The results of this study highlight key challenges in carburetor development and examine how these challenges can impact the fuel efficiency of the final product. Additionally, the study explores the potential benefits of incorporating simulation as a supplementary tool in the development process, while also addressing the associated risks and limitations, particularly during the early stages. The research further presents a simulation model developed as part of this work, discusses the difficulties encountered during its creation, and evaluates the model’s performance by benchmarking its accuracy against measured data.
