Reduced space for source criticism : A qualitative observational study of journalists sources critical work after increased savings requirements

This study investigates the challenges faced by local journalists in a Swedishnewsroom, as they work to maintain source criticism while dealing with limitedresources and tight deadlines. Using ethnographic observations and interviews, theresearch explores how journalists manage the balance between producing newsquickly and ensuring accuracy. The findings show that economic pressures often lead to compromises in source-critical work, even though journalists value credibility and accuracy highly. Key approaches like teamwork, following routines, and using professional guidelineswere important in handling these challenges. However, the study also highlightsweaknesses in the system, such as fewer resources and lack of training, which putjournalistic quality at risk. By connecting these findings to the larger context ofdigitalization and financial cuts in media, the study shows the need for moreinvestments in resources and education to support trustworthy journalism and itsrole in democracy.
