The Return of the Adjective : A syntactic-semantic gender study of character describing adjectives and adverbs of Robert Jordan.

This essay answers the question if there are gender stereotypical tendencies in the Swedish adaptation of The Eye of the World by analyzing personal descriptive words such as adjectives and adverbs. The method used to answer the question is a quantitative data collection method of all the work's descriptive words. This data was sorted into different semantic fields such as appearance, physical and psychological characteristics and social relationships. The categorized data is analyzed by using gender theories in relation to connotations to show gender-coded person descriptions in both a positive and negative sense in relation to social expectations of its gender role. The study concludes that both women and men are described by words that reinforce and confirm their social gender, the study also shows that men are to a greater degree described with negative connotations through polarizations of hypermasculinity and lack of masculinity. The essay's conclusion is consistent with previous research and shows equivalent results that also confirm a stereotypical tendency.
