This research examined the health and medical response to six catastrophic disaster events. It identified critical characteristics necessary to reduce human mortality, analysed and published cause-specific disaster mortality spanning 30 years, created health risk matrices to contrast health threats, and developed an evidence-based model to test actual disaster health programme responses.'<p></p>
