“Quia in omnem terram exivit sonus eorum”: algunas consideraciones sobre la música en los sermones de san Vicente Ferrer
Since, according to Saint Paul, hearing is key to the dissemination of the teachings of the Church, sound has a very important presence in medieval preaching and, in fact, there are countless references to acoustic phenomena of all kinds, among which, naturally, music stands out. The aim of this paper is to make an approach to the way in which one of the most notorious preachers of the Late Middle Ages, Saint Vincent Ferrer, used it as a means for the transmission of moral and doctrinal contents. Given the complexity and extension of the topic, we have focused on some issues that we consider particularly relevant in the use of music in Vincentian preaching. Starting from the very definition of music offered by the preacher, we analyse some of the scenes that he con-structs around the values attributed to the discipline, particularly those related to singing, instruments and musicians, which, in some cases, they respond to a long tradition that dates back to Patristics.
