A Pluralistic Cluster Account of Gender

This paper aims to develop an adequate account of gender by identifying what criteria such a theory must meet and evaluating existing theories against them. It argues that an adequate theory must avoid circularity, capture both the stability and variability of gender, reflect lived experience, and offer a defensible metaphysical account. Through an assessment of biological, social, identity-based, historical, fictionalist, and contextualist theories, the paper shows that each fails in important areas. Thus, the paper proposes a pluralistic cluster account of gender, where no single trait is necessary or sufficient, but overlapping features together constitute gender categories. This theory provides a flexible but structured approach that better aligns with both empirical reality and ethical considerations. The paper defends this account against major objections, including concerns about vagueness, permissiveness, and the role of self-identification and social recognition.
