Physical activity as a treatment method : A study on the use of physical activity and physical activity on prescription (PaP) in psychiatry in the regions of Blekinge, Kalmar, and Kronoberg.
Background: Physical activity as a treatment method has been shown to be an effective approach for treating and preventing both mental and physical illness. Yet the use of this method varies within psychiatric care, and the knowledge among healthcare staff is limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine how healthcare staff within psychiatry in Region Blekinge, Kalmar, and Kronoberg view physical activity and FaR (Physical Activity on Prescription) as a treatment method. The study also aimed to identify which factors influence the decision to use FaR for patients with mental illness and physical diseases. Method: Through a qualitative approach using questions in a questionnaire distributed to healthcare staff in various professional roles, their experiences, attitudes, and practical applications of FaR were highlighted. The study also aimed to map whether and to what extent physical activity is prescribed within psychiatry, and to identify any potential barriers or opportunities that influence the implementation of the method. Results: The results of the study showed that the majority of participants considered physical activity to be a positive and valuable factor as a treatment method. However, several barriers that limit its use emerged, including insufficient education and lack of resources. Conclusion: The results are expected to contribute to increased understanding of how FaR can be integrated in a more effective way within psychiatric care, and also serve as a foundation for future efforts to improve the area.
