Under the Bridge
Looking at maps and pictures of Hornstull from earlier times shows the viewer a both familiar and strange place. Many of the buildings remain and yet roads, houses, parks and bridges from the past, unknown to us reappear. The great empty green lawns of today where busy workshops and factories in the past. Where small streams came rippling through the landscape later generations laid railroad tracks, which in time were replaced by pleasant promenades. In 1928 a new great bridge, Liljeholmsbron traversing Hornsundet was erected, drawn by the great architect Carl Bergsten. Spaces not hitherto seen in Stockholm came in to being between the pillars of the new bridg¬e.This was not meant as a public space. The houses surrounding it has all utilized it for purely practical purposes. The old cinema in Tången 2 (today a gym) uses it for their emergency-exit, Tången 4 has an entrance and exit to its great garage and finally Tången 12 also uses it for its smaller garage. Presently trashcans has been added together with a small, well enclosed low, one-story brick-building. Transforming the underbelly of the viaduct into a locus publicus, without cleaning away its soul, I have decided that the field office can and must go, together with its fences, carpark, building material, litter and garbage. A stair is located at the plaças northernmost corner, the emergency exit of Tången 2 is built over and replaced with a second entrance to Friskis opening up on the resting plane. The 3 + 2 story garage in Tången 4 is also transformed, made ready for a new function yet to be decided. The façade is sawn of, replaced by a transparent glass-façade, loadbearing replaced with reused concrete pillars from Persikan 5, a demolished bus-garage in Danvikstull.
