La prensa decimonónica del Magisterio como vía para la reconstrucción de la tradición ortológica del español

In the last few decades, the orthology has become a topic of interest for historiographical research. Up to now, the study of this discipline has been approached exclusively through sources which has been considered “canonical”, that is, from metalinguistic treatises. However, because of the pedagogical orientation of the discipline, it is worth noting a quite significant way in which linguistic and pedagogical ideas were diffused: the nineteenth century press of the educational practise. This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the development of orthology, through the textual production that the press of the educational practise provides to this subject and its teaching. For this purpose, three aspects will be considered: (i) the orthology concept that is established in the press, (ii) the ideas that are shared through this way and (iii) the canon of authors and works that is constituted. The analysis of a corpus composed of six educational journals published in the second half of the nineteenth century offers significant results about the authors and treatises that constituted the canon of orthology during that period. Also, the designation of the term ortología in the press allows us to understand the scope of the discipline as a study that is applied to the teaching of literacy skills and/or Spanish’s pronunciation
