Hinder och möjligheter för vätgasproduktion i Skellefteås elnät

The climate goals in the EU require industries to transition to fossil-free operations. Through targeted investments inresearch projects, the union facilitates this transition. One of these projects is Hydrogen and Circularity in Väster-botten’s Metal Industry. This work is carried out within the project, which aims to explore the possibilities of usinghydrogen to transition the metal industry in Västerbotten. This report investigates how future hydrogen productionin Skellefteå Harbor may be influenced by conditions in the power grid. By analyzing limitations in the city’s powergrid, an estimated hydrogen production can be calculated. From which a basic economical study can be done. The limitations in the grid are provided by the grid operator Skellefteåkraft, with an approximate constraint of 250 MW. The grid’s design means that the city and the industry share the same limitation, thus the city’s power usage must be considered. The annual power demand for the city and the existing industry is estimated using historical data. The grid’s limitation varies with temperature, and the impact of this variation is examined. The influence of this issignificant, leading to substantial changes in results under certain assumptions. Finally, it is estimated that an investment in an electrolyzer with a capacity of about 60 MW is deemed profitable and feasible given the conditions of the electricity grid. This holds true regardless of which limitation is applied and is based on the most likely weather phenomena. This results in an annual production of approximately 0.5 TWh of hydrogen. The report also shows that future investments in the power grid will be necessary if the consumption of households and the existing industry increases. This is regardless of the assumptions made about the temperaturedependence of the limitation. The report also emphasizes the importance of investigating the hydrogen demand in the area, as this is a crucial condition for a future investment.
