Estrés académico y autoestima en estudiantes universitarios con cargas familiares que combinan trabajo y estudios
The objective of this work is to identify the relationship between self-esteem and academic stress in university students who combine employment and studies and who have dependent family members. The sample is made up of 123 men and 114 women between 29 and 50 years old. The present study is observational, analytical, correlational and cross-sectional. Two instruments have been applied: the SISCO Academic Stress Inventory and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, adult version translated into Spanish. The results show that there is an association between sex and self-esteem at a bivariate level (p<0.05), an association between sex and academic self-esteem at a bivariate level (p<0.05) and an association between sex and total self-esteem at a bivariate level (p= 0.045), with men registering higher scores in all cases. On the other hand, there is no statistically significant relationship between the sex of the respondents and their social and family self-esteem. Finally, total stress has a moderate correlation with total self-esteem, self-esteem, and academic self-esteem, given that higher levels of stress are associated with lower levels of total self-esteem (r= -0.47, p<0 .01), lower levels of self-esteem (r= -0.44, p<0.05) and lower levels of academic self-esteem (r= -0.47, p<0.01). Total stress does not show a correlation with social self-esteem or family self-esteem. Overall, itisverified that men have a higher total and academic self-esteem than women, although this difference does not exist by sex in relation to the social and family dimensions. Finally, and in the absence of an analysis with a larger population that could be representative of the whole, itisconcluded that, in our interest, which was academic, there is a relationship between academic stress and self-esteem among university students with family responsibilities and active employment.
