Design and Implementation of Immersive Systems for Decision-Making

Using the design science research methodology, this study details the design and implementation of immersive systems for decision support. Observing the literature within the domain of immersive decision-making (IDM), we conceptualised an IDM model with six attributes: decision contexts, drivers, types, aspects, methodologies, and effects. Through six design spikes, we built an immersive systems architecture with mechanisms that facilitated the flow of work and emphasised its core functionality, multisensory information management. To optimise decision-making (DM), the seventh design spike was implemented to evaluate IDM in two high-stakes DM scenarios: property investment and emergency response, respectively. Our applied system was observed to process and manage dense, real-time multisensory information and provide decision-makers with enhanced situational and spatial stimulus to improve their decision-making. Our work contributes theoretical, procedural, and system artifacts to immersive decision support systems and emphasises the need for further investigation into its dynamics on decision speed, accuracy, and confidence.
