Design and simulation of a PCB stator for axial flux motor
As we know, electric motors play a large role in the electrification of the world around us. For this electrification to be as efficient as possible, we need the most efficient motor for every application. The axial flux motors are a very attractive option for high torque density situations but have a manufacturing complexity drawback that increase the cost and limit their usage. By implementing a so called PCB stator in the axial flux motor, it is possible to reduce the complexity of production and make them a more attractive option for a wider range of users. By the nature of PCB stators, they are also of the coreless type which usually is not optimal for high torque motors. This report will investigate the viability of the coreless PCB stator and present design considerations for such a motor. Analytical models of our own design are verified with numerical simulations of the magnetic field performed in ANSYS Electronics Desktop. The models did coincide with the simulations with a linear deviation of 1/3 for all results. This was caused by known variables and could be accounted for in later simulations done in MATLAB simulink. We could conclude that the PCB stator technology is able to be used in high torque motors and could be the cheapest alternative, but will not be the most efficient one.
