Den romanska korportalen i Vreta klosters kyrka

In Vreta Monastery, in the Monastery lapidarium, there is a reconstructed Romanesque portal since the 1920s. It was found during the major renovation of the monastery church in the 1910s. The various fragments were found secondarily walled in Magnus Nilsson's choir, and originally formed an entrance to the southern transept of the choir built in the late 12th century. The portal formed an entrance from the area south of the monastery church (the central monastery buildings in Vreta are located north of the church). The Romanesque portal is decorated with peculiar roundels, which seem to be completely unique in their time, but are found partly on Gotland, partly in the nearby Flistad church, but in these contexts with a significantly later date. The article discusses the portal's location, chronology and models, and concludes with a discussion of movement and function in Cistercian nunneries.
