From console to classroom: a study on video games in school-age educare
The purpose of the study is to investigate how video games are used as educational tools in school-age educare (fritidshem), what challenges exist, and how they can be used for educational purposes. I conducted a semi-structured qualitative interview study. The results show that after-school teachers use a variety of methods when using video games as an educational tool. One of the more common methods is through tournaments, where students get to practice, among other things, turn-taking and cooperation. The study concludes that video games as an educational tool are an effective option for increasing students’ motivation, aligning with the curriculum for after-school care. Finally, the biggest challenges were the after-school care teachers' knowledge in video games and excessive screen time for students.
