Ctrl+Paisley: Print, Post, Repeat
This project investigates new visual expressions of the paisley motif. It traced how classic prints have been used traditionally and how some fashion designers in the 21st century have created alternative expressions based on these traditions. Inspired by Miuccia Prada’s methodology—using an element deemed subjectively ugly to create interesting ready-to-wear— the paisley motif was chosen as a starting point. The paisley motif is recognizable but has ceased to evolve in its look which created an opportunity to challenge the norms of print design in women’s fashion. This project utilized digital print and construction techniques to develop paisley motifs and shapes in both 2D surface design and in 3D, resulting in a women’s ready-to-wear inspired collection of five looks. This demonstrates how classic print traditions can be reinterpreted and how questioning perceptions of ugliness can create beauty.
