Anatomía femenina y devoción mariana: interpretación iconográfica de la visualidad de Maria Lactans y otros tipos de la Virgen a finales de la Edad Media
During the late Middle Ages, the iconographic types in which Mary breastfeeds Christ became popular: the Nursing Madonna and the Virgin of Humility; as well as a variant of the latter, the Virgin of the Rose Garden. The purpose of this study is to carry out an iconographic interpretation of these images from medieval knowledge about female anatomy, as a supposed equiv-alence between menstrual blood and breast milk, as well as literary sources of a theological nature, around various Marian prerogatives and symbols such as the rose. With all this, relations will be established between the images of the divine motherhood of Mary, more specifically the nursing of Christ, and her perpetual virginity; as well as the Eucharistic and/or intercessory character of the iconographic types of the Virgin of Humility and the Virgin of the Rose Garden, among others.
