Abolicionismo, personalización y agencia
A discussion of the abolitionist position defended by the American philosopher Gary L. Francione is presented. The view adopted by abolitionism privileges metaphysical symmetry between humans and non-humans. In this regard, he maintains that sentience, which includes a robust notion of agency and personality, is the fundamental characteristic that allows symmetry to be postulated. If such a starting point is accepted, a series of implications follow, the corollary of which is the idea that any use of animals constitutes a morally reprehensible action that should be legally and politically sanctioned. In the view of the human organization of the world, says the abolitionist, for many would-be sentients it is better not to come into existence.
