Who thinks about the elderly : A qualitative study about older people's experience of our digital world.
The purpose of this study was to investigate and gain a deeper understanding of how older individuals experience the impact of digital development on them. The goal was to capture the thoughts, feelings, and perceptions of the elderly. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews, where data was collected from seven older participants through personal interviews. The interview responses have then been analysed using thematic analysis, developed by Braun and Clarke. The sample consisted of seven individuals, all born in the 1940s or earlier and living within Karlstad municipality. From the thematic analysis, the results showed that older people have difficulties and need help to cope with everyday life with the digital technology. They felt that there was an exclusion in connection with digitalisation and there was a desire among the elderly to learn the technology. After the data was processed and analyzed Braun and Clarke's six-step model, four main themes were created; Obstacles and learning, The feeling of exclusion and injustice in a digitalized world, The balance between digital resistance and new opportunities and Need for knowledge and support, based on the participants' stories. Keywords: difficulties, low self-esteem, lack of knowledge, need for help, willingness, injustice
