Sustainability Integration in Nordic Private Equity : Motivations, Mechanisms, and Financial implications
As sustainability becomes a defining issue in global financial markets, private equity (PE) firms, particularly in the Nordic region, are under increasing pressure to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into their investment strategies. This thesis explores the motivations and mechanisms through which Nordic PE firms prioritize sustainability, and how this emphasis affects financial performance. Drawing on six semi-structured interviews with senior stakeholders from PE firms and ESG consultancies, the study adopts an interpretivist and abductive research approach. The findings reveal that ESG integration is driven by a combination of ethical commitment, regulatory compliance, stakeholder expectations, and long-term financial logic. While ESG remains unevenly implemented, especially among smaller firms, the overall trajectory points toward normalization with the overall trajectory points toward normalization within the investment logic of Nordic PE. The study employs a multi-theoretical lens, drawing from institutional, stakeholder, signaling, legitimacy, and dynamic capabilities theories. Among these, institutional theory provides the most robust explanation for the convergence of ESG practices under regulatory and normative pressures. ESG is increasingly viewed not only as a reputational or compliance issue, but as a strategic differentiator with implications for valuation, risk management, and talent retention. However, challenges remain, including regulatory complexity, ESG fatigue, and limited internal capacity. The thesis offers both theoretical insights and practical recommendations for advancing ESG integration in PE, while contributing to a broader understanding of sustainable finance in a changing institutional environment.
