Shoreline Modification and Land Use of Ford Lake, Michigan

Ford Lake in an 800-acre dammed reservoir on the Huron River some 35 miles west of Detroit. The 10-mile shoreline was investigated in the field as well as with the use of soil data and aerial photographs. The investigation of the shoreline reveals that shoreline erosion and mass wasting are related to high erodible soil types. The shoreline is being urbanized mainly with multifamily housing, causing a removal of the deciduous hardwood vegetation which has led to increased runoff. Shoreline owners have reinforced the shoreline to combat severe erosion. It is recommended that a reevalution be undertaken to provide development compatible with the aesthetic qualities of the lake and its shoreline.
