The role of cultural heritage in total defence crisis management and preparedness

The purpose of this thesis is to create a deeper understanding of how perspectives on cultural heritage and the cultural heritage sector in Sweden have been influenced by changes in today’s security and political situation. This has been accomplished by analyzing literary sources, including reports from relevant authorities within total defense, which address issues related to cultural heritage during armed conflict and heightened preparedness. Results have shown a significant shift in the perception of cultural heritage within total defense planning. Previously marginal, cultural heritage has now received increased attention, emphasizing on protective measures and its role in societal identity and unity, particularly following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Further research is however needed on managing potential damage to cultural heritage and its impact on societal resilience and the will to defend.
