Piometra fechada em canino fêmea: relato de caso
Pyometra is defined as inflammation of the uterus, a disease that affects female dogs and cats, and is a common occurrence in the clinical routine of small animals. It is usually associated with the use of prostaglandins, but there are also other factors involved, such as genetics, age, number of cycles and phases of the reproductive cycle. It is related to repeated exposure to estrogen during estrus, followed by prolonged periods of progesterone predominance, which causes changes in the endometrium. The differential diagnosis of this disease is endometritis, mucometra, cystic endometrial hyperplasia, vaginitis, ascites, abortion and pregnancy. The diagnosis is made through clinical history, symptoms, imaging tests and complementary exams. The elective treatment is ovariohysterectomy (OVH), but it can also be performed through antibiotic therapy. Due to the importance of this disease in clinical routine, this study aims to report the case of a female canine that presented closed pyometra, treated during an extracurricular internship at a veterinary clinic in the city of Santo Ângelo/RS.
