The Resistance
Antibiotics have long been used as a way for humans to combat illnesses. However, there has been a rise of resistance to antibiotics due to the pathogenic bacteria evolving. Scientists have been trying to find new microbes to develop new antibiotics. One way that they are doing this is by calling on the aid of college students taking microbiology by using the Tiny Earth curriculum. I performed serial dilutions of a soil sample extract, isolated and screened microbes for antibiotic activity. One specific candidate, referred to as Boba, inhibited the safe ESKAPE, Staphylococcus epidermidis. These findings could potentially help the medical field to create new antibiotics that humans can use to combat illnesses.
