Model of Battery Degradation and Performance within Telecom Infrastructure : Comparative Study and Modelling of Battery Technologies relevant to Telecom infrastructure

This thesis presents a two-part study on battery degradation for telecom applications. The first part compares three battery chemistries—Sodium-Ion (SIB), Lithium-Ion (LIB), and Lead-Acid (LAB)—based on existing literature, assessing their performance and degradation characteristics for extended telecom use beyond traditional backup functions. The second part develops a degradation model for Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, simulating their aging under real-world telecom conditions. The model estimates lifetime, performance, and cost evolution using parameters like Depth of Discharge (DoD), temperature, and charge rates, derived from scientific literature. The comparative analysis highlights the strengths and weaknesses of SIB, LIB, and LAB, while the degradation model provides practical insights into the lifetimes of VRLA and LFP batteries in telecom site applications. This work contributes to battery degradation research and offers a tool for optimizing energy solutions in telecom infrastructure.
