Metod för mätning av fiberfrisättning från 3D-formade fiberprodukter

This thesis was conducted in collaboration with Blue Ocean Closures, with the aim of developing a repeatable method for measuring fibre release from 3D shaped fibre products. Currently, there are no standardised methods to measure fibre release from fibre-based closures, yet such a method is essential to ensure high quality and sustainable products. Establishing a repeatable method is a crucial step for product development aimed at reducing fibre release. Three different methods, Method 1 – 3, were explored, but only Method 3 reached the final testing, as the other two faced practical challenges that could not be overcome during the project’s timeframe. Method 3 successfully fulfilled the project’s aim, providing a repeatable approach for measuring fibre release from 3D formed fibre products. The method was divided into two tests: the tapping test, simulating filling line conditions, and the screw test, simulating consumer usage. The method demonstrated clear and significant differences in both fibre quantity and size depending on the closure type and material. Closures made from bleached material tended to release fewer, but larger, fibres compared to unbleached ones. These findings demonstrate the potential of Method 3 as a tool for evaluating fibre release, supporting further development of high quality, fibre-based closures.
