Modelo Homeostático para Evaluar la Resistencia de Insulina y Prevención del Síndrome Metabólico en Adultos

Metabolic syndrome, a public health problem affecting 20% to 25% of adults worldwide, is associated with serious complications such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The present investigation aims to identify the importance of HOMA-IR for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, through a literature review, in order to raise awareness of its usefulness in clinical practice in adults. Based on a review of recent studies, it highlights the variations in HOMA-IR cut-off points among different countries, influenced by demographic and cultural factors. In Brazil, for example, a cut-off value of 2.35 was identified, while significant differences were observed in India, Iran and China, reflecting the need to adapt these values to the local context. In Ecuador, specific reference values have not yet been established, which represents a challenge for its clinical application. The integration of HOMA-IR in medical consultations and public health programs would allow early detection of metabolic syndrome, facilitating personalized and effective interventions that reduce the risk of serious complications and optimize the management of health resources.
