Migrering av arbetsflöden för kontinuerlig integration och kontinuerlig leverans/distribution från Azure DevOps till GitHub : Utvärdering av migreringen från Azure DevOps till GitHub: En fallstudie
This thesis investigates the feasibility and outcomes of migrating the Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines at SJ AB, from Microsoft Azure DevOps (ADO) to GitHub Enterprise (GHE) within a real-world enterprise environment. The primary objective is to assess whether such a migration can sustain or improve pipeline functionality, developer experience, and adherence to security best practices. The methodology combines both qualitative and quantitative approaches. It includes a literature review on CI/CD migration strategies, interviews with key stakeholders at SJ, test migrations of selected pipelines supported by automated audit tools to assess compatibility, and a comparative evaluation of pipeline performance and security across the two platforms. The findings show that GitHub Actions offers full functional equivalence with existing ADO pipelines and delivers similar build performance. It also enhances developer experience through tighter integration with the GitHub ecosystem and more modern security features. Nonetheless, the migration process surfaced certain tooling constraints, such as limitations in fully automated pipeline translation, along with challenges in handling complex or customized workflows, which required manual refinement. Despite these hurdles, the study concludes that GHE is a viable and effective replacement for ADO. With structured documentation, automated tooling support, and an incremental migration strategy, SJ can achieve a smooth transition. In conclusion, this case study underscores that with careful planning, documentation, and iterative validation, organizations can achieve a seamless migration to GitHub Actions, strengthening their CI/CD processes and security posture.
