Management of indeterminate thyroid nodules: changing the paradigm
In this thesis, we showed that the diagnostic workup of cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules can be improved by using FDG-PET/CT, which may accurately reduce the rate of futile diagnostic thyroid surgery by 40%. This thesis demonstrated that this diagnostic strategy is cost-effective, while maintaining quality of life. This was investigated through the EfFECTS trial, a Dutch multicentre randomized controlled trial.
Besides that, this thesis demonstrated that molecular diagnostics are also accurate and competitive with FDG-PET/CT.
