Is it possible to have a value neutral religious belief and worldview? : How can teachers in Swedish primary and secondary schools remain objective and neutral in religious education?
This study explores how religious education teachers adress dilemmas related to non- confessional teaching based on an objective and neutral school system in Sweden. I have looked at methods that religious education teachers can use to maintain an objective and neutral approach in the classroom. The aim of my study has been to explore the didactic methods in religious education, as well as I have identified potential challenges and opportunities for teachers to maintaining objectivity and neutrality in non- confessional religious education in Swedish schools. This study is based on a “small systematic literature” review, analyzing and discussing the research questions thought ten academic articles I have reviewed. The findings suggest that clear definitions of neutrality and objectivity are essential for the school system to establish an objective school curriculum in Swedish schools. Another key fining is how different views on knowledge influenced teachers choice of teaching methods and materials. Given the multicultural context of modern Swedish society, religious education teachers face challenges in selecting appropriate materials and methods that fits students in Sweden. However, that does not necessarily present a barrier, but rather an opportunity to foster dialogue, exchange experiences. These discussions allow prejudiced to be dismantled and give students the chance to explore and understand diverse existential perspectives and ways of life.
