Intuitive design for interactive systems : A field study in scheduling for aviation

This thesis investigates the usability of an interactive web application for scheduling of cabin crew in the aviation industry, with a focus on users’ interaction with interactive elements. The aim is to identify key themes related to user experience and potential difficulties in the user interface. To answer the research question: How do users experience the interaction with an interactive web application for scheduling in the aviation industry, and what factors affect its usability? A qualitative, exploratory field study with an inductive thematic analysis was conducted based on interviews and observations using the think-aloud method. The results of the thematic analysis reveal four themes related to clarity, feedback, and visibility that contributed to good usability, as well as one theme indicating a need for improved design to enhance the intuitiveness of interactive drag-and-drop elements. The study highlights the importance of clear visual cues to improve the user experience with drag-and-drop functionality.
