If It Looks Right: A Man's Lifelong Pursuit of Just the Right Amount of Imperfection
This is a story about a man named Pat Crowley, who spent his life doing high-end body and fender work on rare, vintage cars.I spent some time with Crowley in his shop while he worked on a Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada, the most recent restored example of which sold for close to $1 million. At the time, the 76 year old Crowley was reaching the end of his career and proved remarkably reflective about what he would be leaving behind. In his eyes, much of his legacy boiled down to what he had passed along to a young man named Danny, who he considered something of an apprentice.A few months later, Crowley got into a fatal car accident on his way home from the shop. The Bizzarrini, which hadn't yet been finished, went to Danny. In this profile, I try to tell the story of a man's life through his work.Crowley, who spent decades becoming a master craftsman, hoped he would leave a mark on this world. After his death, I got to see what that meant.
