Inseguridad marítima y el resurgimiento de la piratería somalí
Between 2005 and 2012, Somali pirates raked in between $339m and $413m by holding crew members hostage and demanding ransom payments. Coinciding with the Yemeni Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, Somali piracy appears to have re-emerged. Somali pirates have been implicated in more than 40 incidents since November 2023, and have hijacked several fishing vessels and merchant ships after a decade-long lull. For the first time since May 2012, these criminals have achieved a ransom of $5 million for the hijacking of a merchant vessel. This paper aims to analyse the current situation of this Somali piracy resurgence.
