Grandes aceleraciones y luchas socioambientales en la frontera extractiva de México
The Great Acceleration of the world economy’s social metabolism after World War II marks the beginning of a new geological epoch in the history of the Earth, known as the Anthropocene or – from a critical point of view – the Capitalocene. This article begins with a review of the debates around this affirmation to contextualize the findings of an investigation into the rates of extracting hydrocarbons and metallic minerals from Mexico, from 1950 to 2022, and their relationship to the multiplication of socio-environmental conflicts. It draws from theories that explain the expansion of the extractive frontier in terms of dispossession and struggles over the commons, while underlining the role of the State in the promotion and regulation of extractive activities and as a mediator of social environmental conflicts.
