Hemoglobin can be measured using both invasive and non-invasive methods. However, the non-invasive method cannot currently be used in clinical settings due to insufficient performance. Some studies have pointed out that skin parameters can affect the non-invasive measurement of hemoglobin, but this has not been extensively studied. In his study, 99 volunteers participated, and hemoglobin was measured using the Hemocue® Hb 201+ analyzer and the non- invasive measurements were done using the Rad-67. Skin parameters were measured using Dermalab® Combo and Softplus. The data were analyzed by correlation analysis between skin parameters and both error or absolute error. A multiple regression analysis was performed with the aim of creating the best model to improve the non-invasive method. The results showed that skin elasticity, hydration and temperature affect the accuracy of the non-invasive hemoglobin measurement. Rad-67 tended to overestimate hemoglobin levels when skin elasticity increased and skin temperature increased, while it underestimated the levels upon increased skin hydration. However, none of these parameters affected the precision of the method. In the multiple regression analysis, skin hydration in combination with Rad-67 measurements showed a high R² value and this model can be used in the future to improve the non-invasive method. The study had some limitations, including that the measurements of hemoglobin and skin parameters were not repeated consistently for all observations. Further research is needed to better understand how skin elasticity, moisture and temperature can support this model and improve the accuracy of Rad-67, which could enable the method to be used in the clinic.
