OBJECTIVE: to offer a detailed view of verbal skills in six-year-old children in first grade and the factors that influence their learning. METHOD: a case study was conducted examining verbal skills in 33 6-year-old first-grade students. The AEI.R aptitude test was used to measure verbal skills. The independent variables gender and socioeconomic level were collected through brief surveys. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and tables are presented for analysis. RESULTS: it was found that 16.06% of the study population with low and very low socioeconomic level are at medium level in verbal skills. The gender difference shows small variations in verbal skills, with similar percentages of women 60% and men 56.53% in the low level. CONCLUSION: the findings do not coincide with the national trend in relation to language and verbal skills. The few differences that exist in relation to the performance of this aptitude between men and women are reaffirmed. The influence of socioeconomic level on the learning of these skills is confirmed.
