Embracing home : The art of "Pommersche Fischerteppiche" in Past, Present and Future

This degree work in textile design explores methods of reviving the visuals of traditional crafts through the modern lens with the example of the German “Pommersche Fischerteppiche”. The chosen technique within this investigation is jacquard weaving. Three fabrics have been exploring patterns through usage of colour, materials, distortion and added craft elements. Another layer is added to the pieces through exploration of crafting, by attaching hanging threads, braiding and working with embroidery, putting focus on the tradition through details. This allows for exploration of tactility and movement in the patterns, through the interaction of threads and the woven piece. The outcomes are three suggestions for exploring traditional visuals from a modern perspective inspired by current reflections on craft as a form of art. The result is a concept of reviving traditional crafts through exploration of their visuals, by combining modernised, distorted patterns with handmade detail elements.
